Our Story
From Sacred Roots to Inspired Retreats
Sunmount began in the 1880s with tent houses and cottages nestled in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. By 1914, it showcased some of New Mexico’s earliest Pueblo Revival-style buildings, many of which still stand today.
In the early 20th century, Sunmount attracted artists, writers, and thinkers, enriching Santa Fe’s culture with lectures, poetry, and concerts. The Sunmount Salon became a creative hub for luminaries such as writers and poets Willa Cather, Ezra Pound, Robert Frost, and Carl Sandburg.
Originally a sanatorium where people sought rejuvenation through fresh air and the natural environment, Sunmount evolved into a Carmelite monastery, a Catholic seminary, and eventually The Immaculate Heart of Mary Retreat Center.
Sunmount Retreats honors its legacy by providing an inspiring and inexpensive space for gatherings and learning. Our historic property and tranquil setting nurture connection and creativity. Come stay with us and become part of a community where history and creativity flourish.
